Formally known as Asia Miles and the Marco Polo Club, the Cathay Pacific frequent flyer loyalty program was rebranded in 2022 as simply, Cathay. As of 2019, the loyalty program boasts over 11 million members.

What is Cathay Pacific?

Cathay Pacific is one of the largest and most important Asian airlines as they provide vital passenger and cargo routes from their airport hub at Hong Kong International Airport to over 81 destinations within Asia and around the world. Founded in 1946, the airline was born in British Hong Kong after the Japanese occupation ended in 1945. Cathay Pacific are well known for their connecting flights through Hong Kong, bringing passengers from all parts of the globe to the financial powerhouse of Asia.

How many aircraft does Cathay Pacific have?

With a fleet of 157 aircraft comprising of a mixture of 777’s, A350’s, A330’s and A321neos, Cathay operates a wide-body heavy fleet both on regional routes as well as long-haul.

Cathay Pacific is a Full Service Carrier

Cathay Pacific is a full service carrier, and member of the oneworld airline alliance. The airline is renowned for its’ premium service offering, especially found in its premium cabins, including Premium Economy, Business Class and First Class.

Cathay Pacific Post-Pandemic

Hong Kong shut down completely during the pandemic, and so Cathay Pacific has had a hard time staying in business. They have also had a hard time reopening flight routes in and out of Hong Kong and bringing back planes into service as well as rehiring staff. The Hong Kong Tourism Board bought 500,000 economy flights to giveaway to stabilize Cathay Pacific’s finances and to boost Hong Kong tourism again post pandemic. These have all been given away this year to lucky travellers from all over the world. The worst of the economic conditions is behind Cathay Pacific now, with them just announcing in July a swing back to profitability as demand for airline travel bounced back sharply.

It is the largest airline at Hong Kong International Airport, and is well known for its connecting flights to/from over 70 destinations around the globe through its’ airport hub. Travellers from Asia, Europe, America and Oceania all converge through Hong Kong, onwards to their final destination. Cathay Pacific also helps connect destinations within Asia to the rest of the world, both in terms of passenger flights and cargo.

Hong Kong is a great destination in itself, and a perfect stopover for a couple of days to enjoy the best the city has to offer. Additionally, being Cathay’s airport hub, it is their flagship airport experience, with some of the best airport lounges in the world, including The Pier, Business, The Wing and The Deck.

Cathay Pacific flies to 81 destinations around the world, as of June 2023. With 80 destinations flying to or from Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific has only one fifth-freedom route. This fifth-freedom route actually starts this month, in October 2023, from Taipei, Taiwan to Nagoya, Japan.

They cover destinations in Asia, Africa, Oceania, the USA and Canada, the Middle East, and Europe, with oneworld connections available onto Latin America and South America.

With the addition of the oneworld airline alliance, connecting flights can be booked through Cathay Pacific to over 200 destinations globally.

Cathay Pacific also temporarily (due to seasonally strong headwinds), holds the title of the longest passenger flight in the world, from New York to Hong Kongaccording to Simple Flying.

How to join Cathay: The Cathay Pacific Loyalty Program

Cathay, the Cathay Pacific frequent flyer loyalty program is easy to join. Simply sign up through their website here. Then, you can start earning, buying and redeeming Asia Miles straight away.

Cathay Loyalty Tiers

Cathay, the Cathay Pacific loyalty program, has four tiers, with increasing perks and benefits designed to reward loyalty to flying with Cathay and oneworld airline partners. The four tiers are:

  • Green
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Diamond

Green is the base tier, for all members as soon as they sign up. To upgrade to Cathay Silver, you must earn enough Status Points (through flying with Cathay Pacific or oneworld partners) to meet the required minimum Status Points threshold before the end of your membership year. To renew your Cathay status for another 12 months, you must meet the same number of Status Points within your membership year, which resets to zero when your status upgrades.

Cathay Elite Status Thresholds

The required Status Points threshold for each elite status tier are:

Status Points Required03006001,200

I will cover the increasing perks and benefits of each elite status tier further below, and how it makes your travel journey so much easier.

When does my Cathay membership year end?

Your membership year expiry is 12 months from the date you signed up, date your elite status upgraded or date your status renewed. If you do not meet the required status points but currently hold Silver, Gold, or Diamond status, you will simply move down one tier on your membership year end date, regardless of whether you earned any Status Points at all during your membership year.

What are Asia Miles?

Asia Miles are the Cathay version of airline miles. They are the currency of the Cathay loyalty program.

Cathay Asia Miles can be earned from a variety of sources, not just from flights. Asia Miles can be redeemed for flights with Cathay Pacific and other oneworld partner airlines, physical goods from a wide selection of online retailers, Airport Lounge Passes, Flight Upgrades, Attraction Passes including Hong Kong Disneyland, Photography Experiences in different destinations Cathay Pacific flies to, concert tickets, and exclusive Cathay products and merchandise.

The best thing about having a bank of airline miles at your disposal is that they are great for any last-minute or peak season trips you have to make. Even though the cash price of your flight may be high, using airline miles with a high Redemption Value can save you a ton of money. As long as there is reward flight availability, take the kids on holiday during the school holidays, or head home to see family and loved ones for Christmas, with no need to worry about the steep price of flights at these peak travel times. Spending less on flights also means you can splurge on a nicer hotel, or memorable experiences with loved ones.

So how do you earn a bank of Asia Miles to use at your disposal?

Earning Asia Miles with Cathay: the Cathay Pacific Loyalty Program

Earning Asia Miles couldn’t be easier. With several US options for earning Asia Miles, you don’t need to live in Hong Kong to take advantage.

Flying with Cathay Pacific and oneworld

The easiest way to accumulate Asia Miles is to fly with Cathay Pacific or one of their oneworld airline partners. Flights can be booked through the specific airline partner or Cathay Pacific directly, and you can earn Status Points and Asia Miles after your completed flight.

The number of Asia Miles and Status Points varies according to flight distance, cabin class and fare type, so be sure to check the Cathay Status Point Calculator to see how much your next flight will earn.

Book Hotel and “Flight + Hotel Packages” with Cathay Pacific

Booking Flight + Hotel packages or Hotel only bookings through Cathay Pacific, earns Asia Miles.

The Asia Miles earn rate depends on the origin (for Flight and Hotel packages) and destination (for Hotel bookings), as well as your Cathay elite status.

Check out the Cathay Pacific Holidays website for more information, as well as any current special Asia Miles earning promotions.

US Credit Card Partners

For US-based Cathay frequent flyers, you can earn Asia Miles with your everyday spending by transferring credit card reward points from the following credit card partners:

  • Citibank
  • Capital One
  • American Express Membership Rewards

All these credit card rewards partners transfer rewards points to Asia Miles at a 1:1 conversion rate. Sometimes these credit card partners offer transfer bonuses, so look out for these, especially if you have a Cathay Pacific or oneworld Asia Miles flight redemption in mind.

Hotel Transfer Partners

Cathay also partners with several hotel chains, that allows you to convert your hotel points to Cathay Asia Miles. Below are the hotel chains, grouped by the conversion rate from Hotel Points to Asia Miles:

  • 2:1
    • All Rewards: Accor Live Limitless
  • 2.5:1
    • Hyatt
  • 3:1
    • Marriott Bonvoy
  • 5:1
    • Best Western
    • IHG
  • 10:1
    • Hilton Honors
    • Radisson

If you hold a credit card with Chase, you can also use these hotel loyalty programs to your advantage. As Chase does not directly partner with Asia Miles, look at the transfer rates from Chase to one of the hotel loyalty programs above, and then the conversion to Asia Miles. Do plan this out very carefully and aim for 1 Chase Point > 1 Asia Mile, as a lot of these programs may devalue your hard earned credit card rewards points massively.

You can use Forward of the Wing’s Redemption Value Calculator to examine different redemption options.

Additionally, most of these hotel loyalty programs also have co-branded credit cards. Examine the different credit card options available to you based on your own financial situation, but these hotel loyalty program co-branded credit cards can be another great way to earn Asia Miles for US-based Cathay frequent flyers.

Car Rental Partners

Instead of opting for car rental rewards points, for the programs below, you can opt to earn Cathay Asia Miles instead. This is especially handy if you don’t get car rentals often, or are unlikely to meet the number of points required for a car rental redemption with the native loyalty program.

I know this because I recently had some Hertz points expire, as I seldom have a need for car rental. That hurt, as I could have earned Asia Miles or miles with another one of their airline partners instead.

Earning rates per car rental vary, but Cathay does partner with the following car rental brands:

  • Avis
  • Budget
  • Europcar
  • Hertz
  • Sixt

Car rental points generally can’t be converted post-earning, so make sure to add your Cathay membership number to your booking when you book, and ensure your earning preference has been switched to Cathay from the native car rental points loyalty program.

Buy Asia Miles

If you need more Asia Miles to reach a specific redemption that you have found, you can buy Asia Miles on the checkout page of the Cathay Pacific website.

Select your flight redemption in the “Redeem Flight Award” Portal. On the checkout page, you will see how much the top-up Asia Miles will cost you. Top-up Asia Miles are priced at $60 USD per 2,000 Asia Miles. Do note, purchased top-up Asia Miles cannot exceed more than 30% of the total number of miles required. However, at 3c per Asia Mile, this option is expensive. Only use if you need a small top-up amount, or if the Redemption Value per Asia Mile is greater than 3c.

How do I redeem Asia Miles?

Free Flights

For Flight Redemptions using Asia Miles on Cathay Pacific or oneworld airline partners, use the “Redeem Flight Award” portal on the Cathay Pacific Website. This shows all flight availability including dates and cabin classes available for Asia Miles flight redemptions.

Be sure to use Forward of the Wing’s Redemption Value Calculator to ensure you are getting the maximum Redemption Value from your flight redemption options. You will also need to check the cash price too of your particular flight for the calculator.

Generally, redeeming Asia Miles for Business Class and First Class flights results in a higher Redemption Value.

Online Shopping, Delivered to your Home or Hotel

For all other reward redemptions, use the “Shopping with Cathay” portal to explore all the Food and Wine, Fitness clothing and equipment, home goods, electronics, fashion and beauty, travel accessories, Cathay merchandise, attractions, concerts, experiences and more available with Asia Miles. Availability depends on your country of residence, so be sure to adjust that to see what redemption options you have available. If you are travelling to a specific destination (eg. Japan or Hong Kong), adjust the delivery country and you should see more localized availability, including for concerts and experiences.

Travel Experiences

I especially like that Hong Kong Disneyland tickets are available with Asia Miles. The perfect way to spend a Hong Kong stopover, whether with your kids or spouse, or just by yourself! The travel photography packages are also great, and a perfect redemption for a special occasion such as an anniversary, honeymoon or special family trip away.

Dim Sum
Cathay Pacific’s infamous Dim Sum available from the Noodle Bar in their Airport Lounges around the world.

What are Cathay Status Points?

Status Points are status credits that you can earn when you fly with Cathay Pacific or oneworld partners that help you reach the next tier or renew your tier within the Cathay loyalty program. The Status Points you receive on each flight segment depends on the flight class, flight distance and fare type. You can check how many Status Points you will receive with Cathay Pacific’s Status Point Calculator.

Upgrade your Cathay Elite Status

Once you have enough Status Points to meet the next tier threshold, you will upgrade automatically. This gives you additional perks and benefits to reward your loyalty to Cathay Pacific and oneworld, making your travel journey smoother, more enjoyable and more special, every time you fly.

Renewal of Cathay Elite Status

If you already hold status with Cathay, you will need to meet the renewal Status Point minimum in order to renew your status for the next membership year.

Downgrade of Cathay Elite Status

If you do not meet the required number of Status Points to renew your elite status, you will drop down to the next level. Cathay operates a generous “soft landing” system, so you will only drop down one level, instead of moving to the tier you have acquired enough Status Points for.

Insider Tip: Maximising the length of your Cathay Elite Status

You can use this to your advantage, especially if you have lots of work travel in one particular year. If you can achieve Diamond, you will receive one full membership year at Diamond, one year of Gold, one year of Silver before dropping back to Green, if you do not meet the required Status Points minimum for the Silver tier after you reach Diamond. That’s potentially 3 years of elite status from one year of intense Status Point earning.

How to earn Cathay Status Points: Unlocking Higher Elite Status with the Cathay Pacific Loyalty Program

Earning Cathay Status Points is a straightforward process that rewards your loyalty and dedication to Cathay Pacific and oneworld alliance partner airlines. Simply, you earn Status Points every time you fly with Cathay Pacific or oneworld airlines, and attach you Cathay membership number to your booking. The Status Points you earn will depend on the cabin class, flight distance and fare type. You receive Status Points on each flight segment, not the total journey.

Insider Tip: Status Points are earned per Flight Segment, not your Overall Journey

Status Points are earned on each flight segment, not the overall journey from A to B. For example, for a connecting flight via Hong Kong from London to Sydney, you would receive status points for the London to Hong Kong flight segment, then the Hong Kong to Sydney flight segment.

Also to note, especially for connecting flights through Hong Kong to and from other regional cities in Asia, Cathay Pacific sometimes operates two class aircraft or you may have a mixed class fare. This means you may fly business class or premium economy for one segment, and economy for the next. The Status Points you receive will be based on the cabin class and fare type for each flight segment.

If you booked premium economy through Cathay Pacific’s website, you may end up flying economy on the two-class segment and receive status points for full fare economy (instead of Premium Economy). Something to check before you book, if you need Status Points to reach the next Cathay tier.

You can find out how many Cathay Status Points you will earn for each flight segment with Cathay’s Status Point Calculator.

Who does Cathay partner with?

Cathay Pacific is a member of the oneworld alliance, connecting with 12 other airlines all around the globe. The oneworld airline alliance fosters the through connection of bags on connecting journeys, the foundation for codeshare agreements on specific routes, giving passengers more destination options than only Cathay can provide, and the sharing of frequent flyer perks and benefits amongst member airlines.

oneworld

From a passenger perspective, Cathay rewards loyalty through their loyalty program to frequent fliers of the oneworld alliance member airlines as a whole, and not only loyalty to Cathay Pacific. This makes for a smoother, more enjoyable travel experience with more frequent flights, more routing options and shorter transit times.

It also means that Cathay members can redeem Asia Miles for flight redemptions with any oneworld airline, subject to availability. This vastly improves reward flight availability, routing options and cabin options too.

Other Cathay Pacific Partner Airlines

In addition to oneworld, Cathay also has codeshare partnership agreements with Air New Zealand, Air Canada, Air China, Bangkok Airways, LATAM, and Lufthansa. These codeshare agreements only apply to specific routes, providing connecting options for passengers to additional destinations. Frequent flyer elite status perks and benefits apply in a limited capacity depending on the terms of the codeshare agreement, specific route and who the flights were booked with.

For example, the Air New Zealand codeshare agreement states that for Air New Zealand Gold and Elite frequent flyers, the Auckland to Hong Kong flight route must be booked with a “NZ” flight number. That means that the flight must be booked through Air New Zealand, to be eligible for the frequent flyer benefits including lounge access. The same applies for Cathay Gold and Diamond travelling on Air New Zealand operated flights. These must have a “CX” flight number and be booked through Cathay Pacific.

If you hold Cathay Silver and flying from Hong Kong, you should always opt for Cathay Pacific marketed and operated flights booked through Cathay directly, so you can guarantee lounge access at Hong Kong International Airport, such as the absolutely incredible The Pier, Business Class Lounge.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Cathay Pacific loyalty program, Cathay, offers a plethora of benefits and rewards for frequent flyers. I really like the low requirements for Cathay Pacific-only lounge access for Silver members, especially if you flying Cathay Pacific most often and especially from or through their Hong Kong airport hub.

There are a wide variety of ways to earn Asia Miles, and even more for Hong Kong-based frequent flyers. If you fly long-haul to Asia often from the USA, Europe or Oceania, Cathay can be a great oneworld loyalty program that can make it easier to achieve oneworld Sapphire or oneworld Emerald than American Airlines AAdvantage Platinum, Qantas Frequent Flyer Gold or British Airways Silver or Gold, if you travel long-haul in premium cabins frequently.

Whilst their status points earn seems to be low when compared to other oneworld airlines, Cathay Pacific is a long-haul heavy carrier, so if you fly premium cabins long-haul often, such as for business, it can make sense.

Sign up for the Cathay, the Cathay Pacific loyalty program today.
